Caring for Your Jewelry

A few simple practices to help your jewelry remain as beautiful as the day it arrived.
Everyday Wear

Jewelry is designed to accompany everyday moments, but not every activity. Remove your pieces before sleeping, exercising, gardening, or lifting heavy objects, where repeated impact can gradually loosen stones or wear away delicate finishes.

A small habit that makes a difference: Put your jewelry on last when getting dressed and remove it first at the end of the day. It minimizes accidental snagging and unnecessary contact with fabrics, cosmetics, and hair products.

Water and Moisture

Water alone rarely causes immediate damage, but moisture combined with soaps, chlorine, saltwater, lotions, and perspiration can gradually dull finishes and accelerate wear. We recommend removing your jewelry before showering, swimming, or exercising.

A simple tip: If your jewelry does become wet, dry it with a soft cloth before storing it. Even small amounts of trapped moisture can contribute to tarnishing over time, particularly with sterling silver.

Storage

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box to prevent scratches and tangling. Chains are especially prone to knotting, while gemstones and pearls can be scratched by harder metals.

Something many people don't realize: Leaving jewelry on a bathroom countertop exposes it to constant humidity, even when it isn't being worn. A cool, dry drawer or jewelry box is a much better long-term home.

Cleaning

Most jewelry only needs occasional cleaning to maintain its brilliance. A soft polishing cloth removes everyday oils and fingerprints, while mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth can safely clean many metal pieces.

One thing to avoid: Paper towels and tissues may feel soft, but their fibers can leave tiny surface scratches over time. A dedicated microfiber or jewelry polishing cloth is always the better choice.

Silver

Sterling silver naturally develops a soft patina as it reacts with oxygen in the air. This is a normal characteristic of the metal—not a flaw—and can easily be restored with occasional polishing.

A useful secret: Silver worn regularly often tarnishes less than silver left untouched for months. Gentle, consistent wear naturally helps reduce oxidation.

Gold Plating

Gold-plated jewelry is crafted to be enjoyed often, but its finish will naturally soften with time and wear. Limiting exposure to moisture, friction, perfumes, and household chemicals will help preserve its appearance.

The biggest factor isn't water—it's friction. Pieces worn tightly against the skin, layered together, or rubbed against desks and countertops tend to show wear much sooner than those exposed only to occasional moisture.

Gemstones and Pearls

Natural gemstones and pearls deserve extra care. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and unnecessary impacts, and store each piece separately whenever possible.

Pearls are especially unique. Unlike most gemstones, pearls benefit from being worn occasionally. The natural oils from your skin help maintain their luster, while long periods in very dry environments can cause them to lose moisture over time.

Travel

Travel with jewelry in a dedicated pouch or travel case, storing each piece separately whenever possible. This helps prevent scratches, tangles, and unnecessary wear while in transit.

An easy travel habit: Carry valuable jewelry in your carry-on rather than checked luggage. Not only is it more secure, but it also protects delicate pieces from temperature changes and rough handling.
